Euroscola - March 2011

Fifteen enthusiastic students from St Martin’s College Sixth Form participated in the Euroscola Programme 2011 in Strasbourg in March this year accompanied by two teachers, Ms Anna Cali and Mr Rennie Mercieca.

This year Giulio Sammut and Ryan Gatt were the spokespersons selected to represent our country and College addressing the youth congregation at the Council of Europe in March 2011. Their presentation gave a clear insight into various aspects of the Maltese Islands as well as an overview of what Malta has to offer young people visiting our archipelago.

Jessica Tortell stole the show when she carried away a trophy for the winning team in the Euroscola Competition which consisted of various exercises testing the students’ knowledge of the European Union and their ability to discuss issues of current concern throughout the EU.

Our students were complimented for their smart appearance and their savoir faire when interacting with other students from all parts of the EU.

Apart from the Euroscola Programme the Maltese team also visited the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights where they were hosted at the latter institution byChief Justice Dr Vincent De Gaetano who gave them a very interesting account of the sort of cases this Supreme Court deliberates on.

Needless to say, the visit was not all toil and travel. The group visited the magnificent cathedral of Strasbourg and with their young and healthy appetite, feasted on the delicacies this city had to offer. One thing worth mentioning is that our students were at all times one united family. They proved they can have clean fun with no hitches.
